Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday reassured citizens that the recent series of light earthquakes in Karachi may actually be beneficial, as they help release built-up seismic energy, potentially preventing larger disasters.
Speaking to reporters in Karachi, CM Murad noted that “low-scale tremors are a good thing” and explained that minor seismic activity helps the earth gradually release pressure. “I have studied engineering,” he added, “and if this energy is released slowly, it reduces the chances of a major earthquake.”
Tremors Continue for Third Consecutive Day
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that Karachi has experienced 20 tremors since Sunday. The most recent quake, measuring 2.0 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 11:52 AM today, with its epicentre 23 km east of Malir.
Since the onset of seismic activity:
-
9 tremors were recorded near Malir
-
5 near DHA
-
3 in Quaidabad
-
1 each in Gadap Town, Korangi, and DHA City
The largest tremor so far was 3.6 magnitude on Sunday evening.
What Experts Say
Karachi Chief Meteorologist Amir Hyder Laghari stated that a historical fault line has become active. He explained that as this fault releases energy, the tremors will subside—possibly within a week.
Dr. Imran Ahmed Khan from Karachi University’s Geography Department echoed this view, saying the tremors are likely due to an imbalance between the Indian, Arabian, and Eurasian tectonic plates. Once that balance is restored, the earthquakes should stop.
No Major Quake Expected
Experts have confirmed that Karachi lies far from any active plate boundaries, placing it in a “passive margin” zone. Dr. Adnan Khan, a geology professor at KU, assured that major quakes are unlikely in the city, with small quakes (between 3 and 4 magnitude) being normal and not dangerous.
Nationwide Seismic Activity
Pakistan falls on three tectonic plates, making it prone to regular seismic activity. In February alone, the country recorded an average of one quake per day, while in April, tremors were felt across Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore.
Public Advised to Stay Calm
While panic gripped some areas during recent tremors, CM Murad urged citizens not to worry and to avoid spreading misinformation. He emphasized that authorities are monitoring the situation closely and that preparedness remains key.
