The District Government Karachi is launching a campaign for the implementation of tobacco control laws at all “6” Districts of Karachi. The main focus will be the Protection of Non- Smokers from second-hand smoke. All Public places and Public transport will be ensured to be smoke-free.

This initiative is being started in collaboration with the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination, Islamabad, with the objective of protecting the lives of 166,000 Pakistanis who die of tobacco-related diseases, every year.

The Commissioner Karachi Mr. Iftikhar Shalwani was addressing a largely attended meeting of all Deputy Commissioners, Senior Officers of Police,Rangers, Health, Education, Excise, Horticulture and, food departments.

A mobile app “ Smoke Free Pakistan” was also launched by the worthy Commissioner Karachi, which will be available to all cell phone users to report violation of tobacco control laws, across the country.

Ministry of NHSR&C started “Smoke free Cities” project from Islamabad. The model in which being replicated in “5” major districts of Punjab and of KPK. Now Karachi with its population of more than 20 million will be a part of this cause to prevent the death of disease and economic loss due to tobacco use.

Dr. Minhaj us Siraj Director, Tobacco Control, Ministry of NHSR&C appreciated the commitment of The Commissioner Karachi and his team for joining hands for the ultimate goal of prevention of diseases and tobacco-free next generations.
