Chairman of the Gadap Town Municipal Corporation, Tariq Aziz Baloch, issued a statement on the occasion of International Labour Day, observed on May 1st, expressing solidarity with workers worldwide, particularly the laborers of Chicago whose struggle laid the foundation for this historic day.
In his message, Baloch emphasized that Labour Day is marked with great enthusiasm across Pakistan and the world as a tribute to the struggles, sacrifices, and rights of the working class. Highlighting the significance of the day, he recalled the vital role played by the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, in the 1970s to safeguard workers’ rights in the country.
He noted that during Bhutto’s tenure, Pakistan saw the introduction of its first comprehensive labour policy. Industrial workers were granted the right to unionize, and the social security system was strengthened. “Under Bhutto’s leadership, workers not only found a voice but also began to experience improvements in their socio-economic conditions,” he said.
Despite these advancements, Baloch acknowledged that the working class continues to face various challenges. He reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the dignity of laborers and stressed the importance of continuing the struggle for their rights.
On this Labour Day, he paid tribute not only to the hardworking men and women of the nation but also to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for his enduring contributions to the labour movement in Pakistan.
