The District Administration of Karachi East and South has declared the both districts model of tobacco smoke free city after the tireless efforts of more than two years with the support of Tobacco Control Cell Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) Government of Pakistan.
Kanwal Nizam Bhutto Additional Commissioner II Karachi / Chairman Karachi Implementation & Monitoring Committee (KIMC) on Tobacco Control and Umamah Solangi Additional Deputy Commissioner II Karachi East /Head Tobacco Control Cell District East graced the event as a Chief Guest , However officers from district departments including Muhammad Zubair SP Jamshed Zone ,Zahid Ali Khan Deputy Secretary Sindh Board of Technical Education , Masood Rajput Sub Inspector Traffic Police and other officials from Health , Education, DMC including all district departments attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion Kanwal Bhutto stated that, the work which was done during the past two years in district east and south is appreciable but much more needs to be done regarding awareness and enforcement of tobacco control laws.
However, she praised the efforts of Tobacco Control Cell (TCC), Ministry of NHSRC and District Administration East, South for replicating a model of ‘Tobacco Smoke Free Islamabad’ in their respective districts.
Commissioner Karachi and District Administration is committed to achieve a goal of thirty percent reduction in smokers till 2025, she added.
Whereas Umamah Solangi briefed participants about the district administration East activities during last two years regarding awareness and enforcement with the support of Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) and district departments.
Further she said that, The District Administration East on the directives of commissioner Karachi and Deputy Commissioner East is working with district departments to spread the message of tobacco use hazard and tobacco control laws compliance and while realizing the need of infrastructure and smooth coordination with district departments and public Tobacco Control Cell, headed by the ADC II has notified by the office of Deputy Commissioner East.
On this occasion, Muhammad Aftab, Project Manager ‘Tobacco Control-Smoke Free Cities’ Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) gave a presentation to participants on progress, achievements and way forward for Smoke Free Karachi. He presented the major achievements about the overall activities of district administration including police, traffic police, education and other departments.
He appreciated the efforts of Karachi Administration and both Additional Deputy Commissioners of Karachi East and South.
He also shed light on the existing tobacco control laws and a role of departments for ensuring the enforcement of tobacco control laws to save future generation from tobacco use hazards. At the end, Kanwal Nizam Bhutto Additional Commissioner II Karachi / Chairman Karachi Implementation & Monitoring Committee (KIMC) on Tobacco Control declare the ‘Smoke Free Karachi (East / South)’ electronically through pressing the button.
At last appreciation shield were given to Additional Commissioner Karachi, Additional Deputy Commissioner East / South and Director Tobacco Control Ministry of NHSRC for their tremendous services and achievements for the compliance on tobacco control laws.
