Renowned cricketer and batsman Babar Azam has tendered his resignation from captaincy following Pakistan’s untimely departure from the Cricket World Cup. Expressing the complexity of his decision, Babar, in a heartfelt Instagram post, affirmed his commitment to serve Pakistan as a player across all formats, stating, “It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats.”
Babar’s decision received resounding endorsement from fans, underscoring his profound impact on Pakistan’s cricket landscape.
Singer Asim Azhar, echoing sentiments of many admirers, expressed support for Babar’s enduring captain, tweeting, “#thankyoubabarazam you gave your all as captain of Pakistan and we are proud of you. Praying for many runs, milestones, records and wins for you and Pakistan now.”
An outpouring of support flooded social media with fans expressing unwavering loyalty and admiration: “We will always support you. Love you, king,” wrote a user. “No matter, you lose the game but you win our hearts,” added another.
“Stepping down from the captaincy is the right decision, keep focus on your game and stay shining!” emphasised a user. “Inshallah, you will become the greatest ever batsman to play for PCT. Always behind you,” one more chimed in.
Acknowledging Babar’s prowess, Zaka Ashraf had also remarked, “Babar is truly a world-class player and we want him to continue to thrive as a player. He is one of the best batters Pakistan has ever produced.”
Concurrently, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Shan Masood as the Test captain for the impending World Test Championship cycle till 2023-25. Meanwhile, the vibrant left-arm fast bowler, Shaheen Afridi, has assumed leadership for the T20 side, gearing up for the challenges of a demanding five-match T20 series in New Zealand after the Australian tour. The announcement of the next ODI captain remains pending from the PCB.
