ISLAMBAD: An accountability court in Islamabad on Monday reserved its verdict in Ishaq Dar’s asset beyond means case.
During the hearing today, NAB Prosecutor Afzal Qureshi stated in court that no substantial evidence was found against the accused.
In response, Judge Mohammad Bashir asked the accountability watchdog to provide the same in writing, with the intention of announcing the verdict tomorrow.
Qureshi maintained that NAB has “presented evidence based on merit; now, it is up to the court to announce the verdict”.
The hearing was then adjourned with instructions to NAB to provide their statement regarding the lack of evidence against the accused in writing.
Earlier, Dar’s frozen assets were restored by the Lahore district administration following orders from the accountability bureau. NAB also directed authorities to unfreeze the finance minister’s bank accounts, which had been frozen earlier.
The assets were frozen due to Dar’s continuous absence from court proceedings in a reference filed in 2017. The NAB had alleged that Dar acquired assets beyond his known sources of income. In November, an Islamabad accountability court referred the case back to the NAB, citing a lack of jurisdiction under new NAB laws.
