The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Saturday rejected the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government’s move to hold the next general elections through the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), terming it a plan to undo the 18th Amendment and pronouncing it a “selected parliament”.
In a statement, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh Dr. Bandah Ali Leghari said that the electronic voting machine has various failures when we practically implement during next general elections.
In a recent tweet, he said, IK thinks the votes of overseas Pakistanis will get him re-elected next time, but he is wrong. IK needs to make changes within Pakistan which are seen by everyone and benefit everyone. So far nothing is visible that helps the entire population.
In addition, he said, electronic voting will render several sections of the Election Act including 84 (Voting procedure), 85 (Tendered Ballot Papers), 86 (Challenge of voters), 87 (Spoilt Ballot Papers), 88 (Stopping of the poll), 89 (Voting after the closing of the poll) and 90 (Proceedings at the close of the poll) redundant and required to be amended by amending the rules.
According to the sources, ECP also have raised reservations on EVM, Science and Technology ministry had not briefed the ECP on its EVMs. The commission raised the question as to what would be the alternative if the EVMs stopped working during the elections just like results transmission system (RTS) had in the 2018 polls. Advancement in technology could lead to complications in reusing the machines once they have been used.
