Understanding the Critical Importance of Proper Autoclave Operation to Prevent Catastrophic Failures
By: Akhtiar Ahmed Solangi
Autoclave: Autoclaves are also known as steam sterilizers, and are typically used for healthcare or industrial applications. An autoclave is a machine that uses steam under pressure to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores on items that are placed inside a pressure vessel. The items are heated to an appropriate sterilization temperature for a given amount of time.
The moisture in the steam efficiently transfers heat to the items to destroy the protein structure of the
bacteria and spores. In healthcare, the term “autoclave” is typically used as the nomenclature to describe a Steam Sterilizer. ANSI/AAMI4, which provide standards and guidelines for the processing of medical devices, refers to
autoclaves for healthcare specifically as Steam Sterilizers.

Chamber pressure= 15 Ib per square inch
Holding time= 15 minutes
In which parts of the world is the autoclave used?
Autoclave is an old technique which is only used within Asia today. Because it is cost efficient and very much affective.
Then why all countries won’t use this? Because it is very dangerous to handle a slight mistake could result in a huge disaster equal to a powerful bomb blast and many of the innocent people within the range may suffer big injuries and death also. As an experienced and Technical Professional in it I would strictly say that the one should never handle this who donot have proper knowledge and isn’t skillfully trained. Here are the disastrous consequences of a single and slight mistake in it: With a great concern I want to address an incident involving the reckless operation of the autoclave machine, which resulted in a hazardous blast and significant damage to the facility.
Operating any machinery without the proper training and qualifications is utterly unacceptable and irresponsible.
Such actions not only jeopardize the individual’s safety but also pose a severe threat to the well-being of all employees. The operator was the single one on the floor when the incident took place , but what is the consequence (His family is completely depressed and mentally disturbed) but what if there would be a crowd on that floor at the same time!. Safety is not a matter to be taken lightly, we must prioritize it above all else.
Mostly these incidents take place when the employees are not properly trained and are unqualified. The Permission of operation of these types of surgical machinery should only be given to the Professionals Authorized Employees having a proper training. As i am a working Technical and professional in my opinion these are the safety precautions and methods to be followed while using Autoclave machine. Safety Precautions: 1)Daily check the safety wall. 2)Daily safety walls should be lubricated with Machine Oil. 3)Daily change tank water if not changed regularly so it would result in the storage of dust and rust particles so when the pressure is highly generated so the
dust & rust in water moves up with the steam and chokes up the safety wall resulting in a hazardous blast.
4)Daily check up water in the tank and verify that the water is up to the level nor more nor less than the proper level if water is above the normal level the steam would not be properly produced and if the water is lower than the normal level so the tank would burn quickly resulting in fast production of steam and for that reason again the safety wall would be choked.
5)Check that both pressure gauge meter are working properly by which you could judge the sterilization time and duration. 6)Check the both steam exhaust wall are working properly, if they would not work properly and steam is not properly released and suddenly if someone opens up the steam door so it would cause a severe damage and maybe it could cause a blast. 7)Time accuracy must be followed properly. Note: During the Blast there is a high level of pressure and sound frequency produced which may result in the damage of ear wall such person could be deaf
completely. And also a person could get a sudden heart attack due to high frequency of sound. And During the blast person will get unconscious and his body could be blast in peices. Also within in the blast range every single person would suffer or face death.
The blast has so much power that it could break and penetrate any kind of object like strong walls, glasses etc.
According to my these opinions if these precautions are followed up so there would be minimal chances of such incidents.
