Saeed Ghani reviews arrangements for speedy drainage of rainwater in Karachi

Sindh Local Government Minister, Saeed Ghani, has said the city’s administration and municipal agencies have been directed to ensure speedy drainage of accumulated rainwater in Karachi.

The Local Government Minister stated this during his visit to different areas of Korangi and East districts in Karachi to assess the post-rain situation on Friday.

The elected local government representative, senior district, and administrative officials accompanied the Local Government Minister on the visit that lasted for five hours. Ghani visited three towns in each of the East and Korangi districts and reviewed the post-rain situation.

He said the city’s administration should ensure speedy drainage of rainwater to save Karachi’s residents from undue hardships.

Ghani mentioned that the concerned residents of Karachi could face hardships if 200 to 300 millimetres of rainfall lashed the city in a single spell. He said the city’s administration, however, was fully prepared to tackle the emergency situation in the wake of heavy monsoon rains in Karachi.

He said the relevant project director had been asked to resolve drainage problems in Shah Faisal and Model Town due to the construction of the Malir Expressway. Directions have also been issued to raise the height of the stormwater drain in Korangi for proper drainage.

The Local Government Minister inspected a stormwater drain adjacent to the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology on University Road and expressed resentment at a choking point in the drain. Ghani directed the officials concerned to ensure speedy de-silting of the drain.

He also asked the officials supervising the Red Line BRT corridor construction work on the University Road to ensure that development works should cause minimal hardships to the motorists in monsoon season.

He also directed the Municipal Commissioner KMC, Afzal Zaidi, to ensure proper functioning of the drain beneath the bridge on Rashid Minhas Road.

Ghani said the Sindh government would do its best to minimise sufferings of the masses due to monsoon rains. He said the municipal workers would continue with their emergency services in the monsoon season.

He said the municipal agencies in the city were fully prepared to tackle the situation of heavy monsoon rains.

He later visited different areas of Sohrab Goth Town and inspected their drainage situation.

He directed the officials concerned to ensure de-silting of the main drain of Sohrab Goth Town and construct pathways in its surroundings.

The Local Government Minister also inspected different areas of Safoora Town and reviewed the post-rain situation. He inspected the Chishti Nagar drain and asked the officials to remove encroachment on the drain’s land.
