PILER and Sindh Mental Health Authority Host Landmark Seminar on Suicide Prevention

The Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER), jointly with the Sindh Mental Health Authority, hosted a significant seminar on suicide prevention on September 15, 2024, at the PILER Center in Karachi.

The seminar, brought together key experts and thought leaders to address the critical issue of suicide prevention in our society. 

The event featured a distinguished panel of speakers, including Senator Khuwaja Karim, Dr. Riaz Ahmed Shaikh, Iqbal Effandi, and Habib ud Junaidi, each offering unique perspectives and solutions.

Senator Khuwaja Karim opened the seminar with a compelling call for policy reform, stressing the need for comprehensive mental health policies at the national level.

He emphasized the role of legislation in ensuring that mental health services are accessible and adequately funded.

Dr. Iqbal Efandi, Dean of the Department of Psychiatry at Jinnah Hospital, provided a deep dive into the psychological underpinnings of suicidal behavior.

His presentation highlighted recent advancements in psychiatric treatment and the importance of early intervention and professional support in preventing suicides.

Dr. Riaz Ahmed Shaikh, Dean of the Department of Social Sciences at SZABIST, addressed the social dimensions of mental health and suicide prevention. 

His talk focused on the impact of social support systems and the necessity of integrating mental health education into community programs to foster a more supportive environment.

Habib uddin Junaidi, a veteran trade unionist and mental health advocate, shared his experiences from the field, highlighting the intersection of mental health and labor rights. 

His insights emphasized the need for workplace mental health initiatives and the role of trade unions in advocating for mental health support.

The seminar concluded with a robust panel discussion, where the speakers engaged with the audience,

answering questions and discussing collaborative approaches to enhance suicide prevention efforts.

The event also featured a resource fair, offering attendees valuable information on mental health services and support networks.

PILER and the Sindh Mental Health Authority extend their sincere appreciation to all participants, speakers, and volunteers who contributed to the success of this seminar.
