The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) illuminated its building in red to commemorate World Heart Day 2024, with a theme of “Use Heart for Action”, symbolizing the institute’s commitment to raising awareness about cardiovascular health and the prevention of heart diseases.

In a special ceremony, Salman Abdullah Murad, Honorable Mayor of Karachi, turned on the red illumination as the Chief Guest of the event. The ceremony was graced by Professor Tahir Saghir, Executive Director of NICVD, Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), Professor Khawar Kazmi, Head of the Preventive Cardiology Department at NICVD, faculty members, and other esteemed officials.

Following the lighting ceremony, an awareness walk was held on NICVD’s premises, aimed at encouraging the public to adopt heart-healthy habits and prevent cardiovascular diseases. The walk featured active participation from NICVD’s leadership, faculty, and healthcare professionals, along with Salaman Abdullah and Professor Saghir leading the march.

During the event, Salman Abdullah Murad and Professor Tahir Saghir addressed the attendees, emphasizing the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent heart disease, such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking. Both speakers reiterated NICVD’s role in providing free-of-cost cardiac care services, which have saved countless lives and continue to improve the health of Pakistan’s population.

Salman Abdullah Murad praised NICVD for its tireless work and contributions toward the health of the people of Sindh and beyond. “NICVD’s efforts in combating cardiovascular diseases are unparalleled, and I am proud to be part of this important event. It is vital for all of us to take preventive measures to protect our heart health, and NICVD is leading the way in raising awareness and providing care.”

Professor Tahir Saghir, Executive Director of NICVD, said “NICVD’s commitment to heart health is demonstrated through our ongoing initiatives, from free cardiac care to public awareness efforts. On this World Heart Day, we urge everyone to take action to keep their hearts healthy and adopt lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of heart disease.”

During the event, Professor Khawar Kazmi highlighted the significance of preventive measures in reducing heart disease. He stated, “Prevention is the key to tackling the rise of cardiovascular diseases. It is essential that people become aware of how small lifestyle adjustments, such as maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and getting routine9 health check-ups, can prevent serious heart conditions. NICVD is committed to spreading this message and empowering the public to take control of their heart health.”

The World Heart Day event at NICVD also featured free health screenings, consultations with healthcare professionals, and a yoga session focused on promoting heart health and overall wellness.
