JSMU seminar highlights pharmacists’ important role, laments shortage

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IPS) at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) held a seminar on October 2, 2023, to mark World Pharmacists Day. The seminar, which was titled “Pharmacists: Building a Healthier World,” brought together pharmacists, faculty, students, and other healthcare professionals to discuss the important role that pharmacists play in the healthcare system and to lament the global shortage of qualified pharmacists, which is particularly acute in Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries.

The seminar began with a welcome address by Professor Huma Ali, Principal of IPS-JSMU. Professor Ali highlighted the important role of pharmacists in ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines. She also emphasized the need for pharmacists to stay up-to-date on the latest advances in pharmaceutical science, and lamented the shortage of qualified pharmacists in Pakistan and in middle eastern countries. This shortage is a major challenge to the healthcare system.

Highlighting the significance of pharmacists, Vice Chancellor JSMU, Professor Amjad Siraj Memon emphasized the need for Pakistan to enhance its presence in the field of pharmacy on the global stage. He stressed that the country needed to prepare pharmacy graduates for the growing opportunities in Western and Middle Eastern countries.

Expressing concern over the absence of trained pharmacists in medical stores, Registrar JSMU Dr. Azam Khan advocated for inspections and emphasized the seriousness of this issue.

Student Advisor Professor Kiran Rafiq, Head of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, shed light on the fundamental objectives of the event. Vice Principal Professor Huma Sharif provided insights into the historical background of World Pharmacists Day.

The event featured a workshop on business development for students, led by Dr. Muhammad Tahir Adnan, a business manager at a private pharmaceutical company. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion and receive guidance from industry professionals. Former students were invited as guest speakers to share their experiences and inspire their peers.

The day concluded with an award distribution ceremony, recognize the achievements and contributions of those who organized the event. Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Saadia Akram appreciated the organizers for their efforts.

World Pharmacists Day is celebrated annually on September 25th to recognize the important role that pharmacists play in our healthcare system.
