This collaboration will focus on working towards the achievement of international educational goals along with promoting wellbeing, intellectual growth and entrepreneurial brilliance.

Mr. Syed Tariq Shah, Chairman, All Private School Management Association Sindh and Mr. Usman Akram, Director Business Development, MCC signed the MoU.

International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (BTCMH), Capital Medical University, China.

The ICCBS Spokesman on Wednesday said that Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, and COMSTECH Coordinator-General, and Prof. Dr. Liu Qingquan, Director of the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine signed the MoU on behalf of their institutions in the inaugural ceremony of the Sino-Pakistan Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicine-Traditional Unani Medicine held at the ICCBS – University of Karachi recently (June 9, 2021).

The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman of Prime Minister’s Task Force on Science and Technology, and Prof. Dr. Khalid M. Iraqi, the Vice-Chancellor University of Karachi. The spokesman said, “The broad objectives of this MoU are to promote co-operation in the fields of traditional medicine, these activities should be carried out in accordance with the laws and regulations of the respective countries.”

It is worth mentioning here that the ICCBS was the only institution in Pakistan that was not only certified by ISO but it also became ‘UNESCO Centre for Excellence Category-2 Institute’, he said.

It is also pertinent to mention here that BTCMH is the only comprehensive and modern municipal Tertiary Level III Grade-A TCM hospital in Beijing. The hospital is responsible for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment, teaching, scientific research, and prevention of disease in Beijing.

As per the MOU, both the institutions will encourage cooperation in the field of traditional medicine, on the basis of relevant international laws and domestic laws. The areas of mutual cooperation include jointly conduct clinical trials of selected TCM products, TCM doctor training program, jointly organization of bilateral or multilateral conferences, symposia, seminars, and other scientific meetings, co-supervision of MA and Ph.D. students and etc.

Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman of Prime Minister’s Task Force on Science and Technology, has underlined the importance of the bilateral relations between Pakistan and China, saying that Pak Austrian University of Applied Science and Engineering was established in Haripur, Hazara with the partnership of five Chinese universities.

The establishment of the Sino-Pakistan Cooperation Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi is really phenomenal that will open new horizons for researchers to have new discoveries in the field of traditional medicines.

He was speaking in the inaugural ceremony of the Sino-Pakistan Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicine-Traditional Unani Medicine held at Prof. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui Auditorium of the ICCBS – University of Karachi on Wednesday. Many Chinese and Pakistani officials including Sindh Minister for Health & Population Welfare Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho (Online), Prof. Dr. Khalid M. Iraqi, Vice-Chancellor University of Karachi, Pakistan’s Ambassador in China Mr. Moin ul Haque (Online), Deputy Chief of Mission Chinese Embassy in Pakistan Ms. Chunxue Pang (Online), Mayor Li Chunqiu, Huaihua, Hunan Province, China (Online), Director Health Dr. Dabir Ahmed (Online), Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, and COMSTECH Coordinator General, Ms. Sadia Rashid, President Hamdard Foundation also addressed the occasion physically or online.

Prof. Dr. Khalid M. Iraqi, the University’s chief unveiled the plaque of the Sino-Pakistan Cooperation Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Prof. Rahman pointed out that Pakistan should take a lesson from China, as China had made great progress in every sector of development. The close relations between Pakistan and China on the fronts of science and technology, higher education, and Information Technology are fostering with each passing day, he added. We have established 150 centers across the country, while the establishment of Pak Austrian University of Applied Science and Engineering is one of my achievements, he informed the symposium.

Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho said that the establishment of the Sino-Pakistan Cooperation Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine would play a vital role in the promotion of traditional medicines in both countries. She said that ICCBS– University of Karachi was contributing its role remarkably in the area of research and higher education.

Prof. Dr. Khalid M. Iraqi welcomed the national and international participants on the occasion. Highlighting the role of the ICCBS – University of Karachi in the ongoing pandemic, he said that the international center had played a significant role in the national fight against the pandemic of Covid-19. He said, “The University of Karachi owns 53 departments and 23 centers, while ICCBS is one of our centers of excellence.”

He said that Pakistan and China owned strong collaboration especially in terms of CPEC (China Pakistan Economic Corridor) which is a framework of regional connectivity. The free use of Chinese Covid-19 in Pakistan is a great sign of strong friendship between the two countries.

Pakistan’s Ambassador in China Mr. Moin ul Haque, in his online speech, congratulated Chinese and Pakistani officials for establishing a useful Sino-Pakistan Cooperation Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine at the international center, and said that around 80 percent of the world populations rely on herbal medicines, while Unani and Chinese traditional medicines were practiced in Pakistan for centuries.

Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary said that the new center would perform R&D on traditional Chinese medicines, and clinical trials to prove their efficacy to help the suffering population of Pakistan.

He pointed out that the seven decades of relationship between the two brotherly counties were now translating into institutional collaboration. The ICCBS as a center for excellence owns an international stature in the field of science and research, he said, adding that our institution is conducting numbers of clinical trials on various Chinese medicines. He said, “ICCBS was the only institution in Pakistan which was not only certified by ISO but it also became ‘UNESCO Centre for Excellence Category-2 Institute’.”

In the end, various MoUs were also signed between Pakistani and Chinese institutions.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) and Institute of Business Administration (IBA), under their mutual initiative, signed research grant agreements with three universities as part of their first cycle of Research Grant Award.

ICAP and IBA have joined hands together and formed ICAP-IBA Research Unit (IIRU) with the aim to promote research and development in Pakistan. A call for Research Proposals was invited in November 2020 against which a number of proposals were received across Pakistan.

After thorough review by Research Oversight Committee, three proposals were shortlisted for the First Cycle of Grants. The proposals selected for award include Role of Middle men in Agriculture and its impact on consumer price by Dr. Khalid Mushtaq from University of Agriculture (Faisalabad), Financial Inclusion and the Role of Fintech by Dr. Abdur Rehman Aleemi from Institute of Business Management, Karachi and Technological Innovations and Auditing Practice in Pakistan by Dr. Omair Haroon from Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lahore).

Mr. Khalilullah Shaikh, Chairman Research Oversight Committee and Council Member ICAP, in a signing ceremony held in Karachi and Faisalabad congratulated all recipient Principal Investigators and Universities and said that this is the first ever milestone achieved by ICAP through its IIRU initiative that aimed to foster research culture and bring together industry and academia.

Mr. M Muhammad Suleman Zahid, FCA guest of honor in Faisalabad, Dr. Samra Javed, Head of EMEC, Director ORIC & Advisor to office of the President, IoBM; Dr. Zahir Ahmed Zahir, Director ORIC, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad and Mr. Zunair Zafar CFO Lums were also present.

Rana M. Usman Khan, Council member ICAP, expressed his appreciation for this initiative during ceremony.

He stated that these grants will aid in the conduct of critical research, thereby facilitating the nation’s future economic growth and prosperity.

In promoting the research culture amongst its members, key element of the research grants was to ensure participation of ICAP members as research associates.

IIRU will continue to promote and encourage quality researches through future grant cycles that will create value for relevant stakeholders, as well as enhance the capacity of its members in the field of research.

TSFC in collaboration with District Education Office Primary East on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2021 organized Training of trainers on tobacco control laws for TEO’s and Head Masters at the office of DEO Primary East Karachi.

It was held in Continuation of Tobacco Smoke Free Cities (TSFC) Ministry of NHSR&C efforts to make tobacco smoke free Karachi through the support of Commissioner Karachi Office and Deputy Commissioner/Additional Deputy Commissioners of respective districts.

Dr. Minhaj us Siraj Project Director TSFC and Muhammad Aftab Project Manager TSFC through a presentation shed light on the Tobacco Control laws, successful practices of TSFC in Islamabad including five districts of Punjab .

Moreover, Dr. Minhaj shared about the facts of tobacco use as a pesticide and highlighted the hazards of its usage.

He stated that more than 166000 people died every year due to the use of tobacco products and now a days young generation is using tobacco products which leads to the use of drugs.

He asked Educationists /Headmasters to play their role to aware the young generation about the hazards to tobacco products use.

However, participants of training also shared their views and suggestions regarding the enforcement of Tobacco Control laws and their role to aware students about tobacco hazards.

He also assured for the support of TSFC in providing literature and other material regarding the hazards of tobacco use to the District Education Office East and thanked to the DEO Primary Office for providing the filled Point of Sale Checklists to indicate the violation of Tobacco Control laws around 50 meters of educational institutions.

Further DEO Primary East Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan along with Dr. Minhaj inaugurated the smoke free plate by cutting ribbon after which office of the district education officer primary and secondary east has been declared as a smoke free zone, however they have also distributed certificates among the participants of training.

The National Incubation for Creative Entrepreneurship, University of Karachi, and State Bank of Pakistan Museum inked the memorandum of understanding to promote entreprenurship and provide support to young artists by making opportunities for showcasing their work at the SBPM.

The MoU aims to establishing a digital art gallery, sharing expertise and knowledge, and information related to creative art and exhibitions.

Under this MoU, the KU-NICE and the SBPM would also arrange seminars, exhibitions, and talks for young and upcoming artists. Both parties have agreed to provide assistance in getting membership of national and international or organizations about art galleries and improve the access to cultural experiences.

The KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, the Director Museum, Archives and Art Gallery Department, SBP, Dr Asma Ibrahim, the Chief Executive Officer, Bir Ventures and Founder Ideagist, Hassan Syed signed the MoU documents at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat on Thursday.

“International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) has announced that an online course entitled “Basic Arabic Language Course (Summer 2021)” will start from May 27, 2021, for a period of four months.

The spokesman of the ICCBS said that the ICCBS – University of Karachi was organizing the course in collaboration with Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN). Dr. Muhammad Mehrban Barvi, the Arabic language expert and faculty member at Sheikh Zayed Islamic Center, University of Karachi, will conduct the online course through a video conferencing facility.

The 27th death anniversary of the eminent Pakistan scientist and intellectual Prof. Dr. Saleemuzaman Siddiqui was observed at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) – University of Karachi on Wednesday.

The spokesman of the ICCBS – University of Karachi said that special prayers were offered for the departed soul of Prof. Siddiqui, while Quran and Fateha Khawani were also held for ladies and gents separately in the center.

Paying tribute to Prof. Siddiqui, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, and COMSTECH Coordinator General said that the deceased professor was a scientist, philosopher, artist, poet, critic of literature, and futurist of science. He was a polymath of social and natural sciences. Prof. Siddiqui was the founding director of the internationally famous H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, he said.

In their messages, Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Irqi and Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, ICCBS Patron-in-chief and Chairman of Prime Minister’s Task Force on Science and Technology also paid tribute to the great scholar, and said that his colossal services for Pakistan will always be remembered.

The Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi and the Akhuwat Foundation, have joined hands to support the Institute’s deserving yet meritorious students to pursue their higher education.

The Executive Director, IBA Karachi, Dr. S Akbar Zaidi and Founder, Akhuwat Foundation, Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib signed an MoU at the Foundation’s headquarter in Lahore.

Through this 5-year agreement, Akhuwat Foundation will provide Qarz-e-Hasna to selected 3rd and 4th year IBA students. Under the arrangement, selected students will be able to avail interest free loans of up to PKR 125,000.

Dr. Zaidi thanked Dr. Saqib and appreciated Akhuwat’s efforts to support the youth of the country in pursuing education and remove financial impediments in this pursuit.

They also discussed mutual avenues of interest and vowed to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations to further the mission of making higher education accessible to the masses.

Every year, the IBA, supports around 30% of its student body through its financial assistance program ensuring that the maximum students benefit from quality education at the IBA.

A group of Indonesian University scholars has arrived International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) for pursuing the research training program.

According to the spokesman of the ICCBS – University of Karachi, four Indonesian scholars from the University of Airlangga have visited the International Center, and will stay for a period of three months, under the ICCBS scholarship program for Indonesian young scientists. These scholars will get training in different fields of chemistry, including natural, synthetic, analytical chemistry, etc.

As per the spokesman, these scholars will be provided an opportunity to hands-on various biological techniques. They will also be facilitated to attend various academic activities at the ICCBS.

Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, COMSTECH Coordinator General, and Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences welcomed the foreign scholars, and said that this joint venture would promote science and technology between the two brotherly countries. The program will allow us to develop new and innovative technologies and products to address future challenges, he adds.

He said, “This is indeed in continuation of our conducted numerous visits of young scientists from various universities and research institutions of Indonesia to the ICCBS to encourage and train them in different disciplines.”

He mentioned that ICCBS was the only institution in Pakistan that was not only certified by ISO but also became ‘UNESCO Center for Excellence Category-2 Institute’.
