The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3) aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. In Pakistan, a nation grappling with a complex tapestry of health challenges, this goal is particularly significant. From infectious diseases to malnutrition, Pakistan faces a daunting task in providing quality healthcare to its vast population.

Pakistan continues to battle a range of infectious diseases, including malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. These diseases disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, exacerbating existing health disparities. Despite progress, maternal and child mortality rates remain high in certain regions of Pakistan. Lack of access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural areas, contributes to these challenges. Malnutrition, both under nutrition and over nutrition, is a significant public health issue. Inadequate access to nutritious food, coupled with poor health practices, leads to adverse health outcomes. Mental health is often neglected in Pakistan, with limited resources and stigma hindering access to care. This is particularly concerning given the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders.

Micronutrient deficiencies include Anemia, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Zinc, Calcium, Iodine, and Folic Acid deficiency are a major threat to the life of the mother and her child. Lack of access to effective prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal care by trained professionals is also a contributing factor to the alarming Maternal Mortality Rate (186 deaths per 100,000), Neonatal Mortality Rate (41 deaths per 1000 Live Births), Infant Mortality Rate (56.8 deaths per 1000 live births), and Children under 5 Mortality (67 death per 1000 Live Births).

Non-communicable diseases cover about 58% of total deaths in Pakistan which majorly include Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVDs) like Hypertension and Stroke, Diabetes, Cancers Majorly Lung and Breast Cancer, and Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs). In the past, these diseases were considered to be the diseases of the Older Generation but in recent years they seem to be prevalent in the younger generation too. The incorporation of processed foods into our diets, our sedentary lifestyle, physical inactivity, and to some extent genetics are the main reasons behind it.

The Pakistani government has implemented various initiatives to address these challenges. These include the National Health Strategy, strengthening primary healthcare services, immunization programs, and nutrition interventions. International organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, play a vital role in supporting Pakistan’s efforts to achieve SDG 3. They provide technical assistance, financial resources, and expertise to strengthen the country’s health systems. Community engagement is essential for promoting health and well-being. Raising awareness about health issues, encouraging healthy behaviors, and empowering communities can make a significant difference.

Achieving SDG 3 in Pakistan requires a multi-faceted approach. By addressing infectious diseases, improving maternal and child health, tackling malnutrition, and promoting mental health, Pakistan can create a healthier and more prosperous nation for all its citizens. Through concerted efforts from the government, international partners, and communities, a brighter future for the health and well-being of Pakistanis is within reach.

Mindful Activities like mindful eating, mindful breathing, meditation, and yoga can relax our muscles which will improve our respiratory health, mental health, and gut health. Approximately 150 minutes of moderate activity per week normally can prevent the risk of obesity, reduce stress, and reduce the risk of various cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

We all have heard that “Prevention is better than Cure”. Basic healthy lifestyle changes can lead to “Good Health and well-being”. We need to educate all, raise awareness, and encourage the community members to advocate for themselves. We need to allocate resources to more effective Vaccination Programs, Nutritional Fortified Foods, Safe Water, and Mental Support Programs. We should reciprocate the negative behaviors like Smoking and Substance Abuse and adopt healthy lifestyles to improve overall health and well-being.
