Saeed Ghani orders setting up 24-hr control room for tackling monsoon rain emergency in District East
Sindh Minister for Labour and Human Resources, Saeed Ghani, has asked the officials concerned to set up a control room in the office of District Municipal Corporation East with representatives of the relevant agencies to tackle the likely situation of rain emergency in Karachi.
Sindh Labour Minister, who has also been made the focal person by Sindh Chief Minister for rain emergency in District East, issued the directives to this effect on Sunday while chairing a top-level meeting at the office of Deputy Commissioner East.
Ghani said the representatives of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, DMC, relevant cantonment board, Karachi Police, Traffic Police, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, and other relevant agencies should remain present in the control room for taking necessary steps to tackle the situation of rain emergency. The control room will remain functional round-the-clock.
He asked the officials to adopt the due corrective measures for ensuring speedy drainage of rainwater in such areas of the district that in the past had witnessed urban flooding.
He said the monsoon rains occurred in Karachi every year so the issue of drainage at such troubled spots should be permanently resolved. Ghani was of the view that the monsoon season shouldn’t cause hardships to the Karachiites as instead, citizens should get the opportunity to enjoy the rainy season as a blessing.
He said the KMC and DMC East should join hands with the Cantonment Board Faisal to ensure the de-silting of storm water drains in the cantonment’s jurisdiction including the drain in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area, which goes towards Rabia City.
The Labour Minister said the Sindh government in collaboration with the KMC and DMCs had timely initiated the de-silting of storm water drains in the city in view of the forecast of likely heavy monsoon rains this year.
DMC East Administrator, Rahamtullah Shaikh, said that repair of the drainage system had been carried out on an emergency basis in the areas of University Road, Safari Park, and NIPA Chowrangi before the start of monsoon rains.
He said that de-watering machinery had been deployed in the low-lying areas of the district that in the past had witnessed the accumulation of rainwater.
Later, Ghani along with the DC East and DMC East Administrator visited different areas of District East including Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Urdu, University Road, Nursery, and Mahmoodabad to personally inspect rain emergency measures.
