District Administration inaugurated Tobacco Smoke Free Murree to save generations from tobacco use
Additional Deputy Commissioner Murree Hassan Waqar Cheema issued orders to make Murree a Tobacco Smoke Free place. He said that Murree, a place of tourism where people from all over Pakistan come for sightseeing, should be tobacco smoke free. He said that Smoke Free Murree would reflect Smoke Free Pakistan, He expressed these views while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Tobacco Smoke Free Murree held in Arts Council Murree.
He added that in the first phase, orders were also issued to fix “No Smoking” signage boards outside of all schools and colleges in Murree. No smoking signage would also be fixed at all public and private places and violators will be prosecuted.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Minhaj-us-Siraj, a public health expert, said that today is a great day for those who are working on Tobacco Control. He congratulated the District Administration Rawalpindi, Murree and said that such a healthy initiative is a positive step towards a healthy future for our future generations.
Dr. Samra Mazhar, Director, Tobacco Control / Focal Point, WHO/ FCTC, said that an estimated 160,000 people die every year in Pakistan due to smoking, it can be prevented. The law prohibits the sale of cigarettes to persons under 18 years of age, The sale of cigarettes to persons below 18 years of age is prohibited at all Pan / Tobacco shops in Murree.
The sale, distribution and storage of cigarettes up to 50 meters from the radius of educational institutions is also prohibited. She appreciated this good initiative of Rawalpindi district administration.
Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Commissioner Murree Waqas Safdar Sikandari said that the Murree administration would extend full support to the Ministry of National Health to make Murree smoke free. “First of all, I declare my office and Jinnah Hall tobacco smoke free and In the first phase, Murree administration will declare Mall Road tobacco smoke free”, he added.
However Muhammad Aftab Project Manager Tobacco Control thanked the district administration for extending support to make Murree a tobacco smoke free model tourism place.
Whereas, Country Head of the Union International Khurram Hashmi said that The Union International is providing all possible assistance to the Government of Pakistan to save generations from worst impacts of tobacco use.
At last ,The Murree administration along with the District Administration of Karachi Abid Qamar Shaikh Assistant Commissioner General to Commissioner Karachi and Umaima Solangi Additional Deputy Commissioner Karachi East inaugurated the smoke-free Murree in a formal ceremony.
Officials of Murree Arts Council, Police, Park and Horticulture, Food Authority, Health Department Rawalpindi, Education Department and all concerned departments officials were also present on the occasion.
