AL Mustafa Welfare Society joins hand for Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi


A Letter of Intent signing ceremony held at AL Mustafa Medical Center Gulshan e Iqbal to support the vision of Commissioner Karachi and TSFC Ministry of NHSRC to make Karachi a Tobacco Smoke Free Model City.

Haji Muhammad Hanif Tayyab Chairman AL Mustafa Welfare Society, Abid Qamar Shaikh Assistant Commissioner General for Commissioner Karachi and Dr Minhaj us Siraj Project Director Tobacco Smoke Free Cities (TSFC) Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) signed this LoI on behalf of their respective organizations.

The LoI signing ceremony commenced after the recitation of Holy Quran and the brief introduction of Al Mustafa Welfare Society operation in all over Pakistan by Moin Ahmed Head of Operations Al Mustafa Welfare Society.

Speaking on the occasion Haji M. Hanif Tayyab praised the initiative of Commissioner Karachi Office and TSFC to save the generations from the hazards and deadly effects of Tobacco use.

He also stressed on the need of using platforms of Mosques to spread the message of Tobacco use hazards. However, he also assured to provide every possible support to TSFC staff and Commissioner Karachi Office to save future generations from worst impacts of tobacco use.

It was decided in the LoI that Al Mustafa Welfare Society, TSFC and Commissioner Karachi Office would develop policy guidelines, establish Tobacco Cessation clinics at its medical center to provide help in quitting smoking, conduct awareness sessions, would declare all of its institutions Tobacco Smoke Free Facilities , will register volunteers and provide training on tobacco epidemic and prepare further for tobacco free generation in Pakistan.

On the other hand it was also decided that AL Mustafa Welfare Society in collaboration of TSFC and Commissioner Karachi Office will jointly launch social media campaign and will also develop a joint literature to disseminate among public.

Speaking on the occasion Abid Qamar Sheikh Assistant Commissioner General assured for the support of Commissioner Karachi Office to protect people and specially youth from the use of tobacco and also informed that the Commissioner Karachi office would also take strict action against the non-compliance of tobacco control laws specially at Educational Institutions, Public Service Vehicles and Food Outlets.

Whereas Dr. Minhaj us Siraj shed light on TSFC initiatives in Karachi with the support of district administration and he declared the LoI with Al Mustafa a great milestone in making Karachi a model tobacco smoke free city.

At the end of ceremony Haji Hanif Tayyab and Moin Ahmed presented Ajrak, organization magazine to the guests and vowed to continue its support to promote healthy environment and to save the lives of Pakistanis from tobacco use hazards as more than 160000 people died annually in Pakistan due to tobacco use.
