Sindh Information and Labour Minister, Saeed Ghani, has said the Sindh government has every intention that the local government elections are held in the province at the earliest.
Talking to media persons after attending an international conference here at the Dow University of Health Sciences on Wednesday, the Sindh Information Minister said the next elected mayor of Karachi would belong to Pakistan People’s Party.
Saeed Ghani said that as far as he knew the Election Commission of Pakistan would start from next month the work on delimitation of constituencies in Sindh. Once the delimitation work was over there would be no issue for anyone to hold the local government elections in Sindh without any further delay, he said.
He recalled that the PPP had secured impressive victories in the recent by-elections and cantonment polls in Karachi.
He mentioned that Clifton Cantonment Board was considered as the largest cantonment area in Pakistan while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had traditionally won elections in Clifton Cantonment areas. He said that incumbent President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, and Sindh Governor, Imran Ismail, in the recent past had won elections from the same area. He told journalists that the candidate of PPP for the post of Vice-President of Clifton Cantt had secured eight votes while PTI’s candidate polled just two votes in the polling held just the previous day.
“This fresh incident serves as a good indicator to show as to what extent mood of the people of Karachi has changed,” he said.
The Sindh Information Minister said that NA-249 constituency in Karachi had been won by the PTI in 2018 general elections while the same party stood at fifth position in the by-poll held in the same constituency in 2021 while the PPP had won the by-election.
He said the popularity of PPP in Karachi had been on the rise while the party’s vote bank had also been increasing.
He said the PTI and Muttahida Quami Movement had clearly foreseen their defeat in the forthcoming local government elections in Sindh as that was why both the parties had started agitation on the pretext of the newly passed local government amendment bill.
He said that both the Opposition parties had the intention to run away from the local government elections in Sindh as that was why they had desire that the delay occurred in the polls through any mean including moving the courts on this issue.
He said both the parties wanted to avoid the local government polls so not to get exposed before the people as otherwise the masses would know that these parties had completely lost their worth on the ground.
He said the result of recently held municipal elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had showed that the people of KPK had completely rejected the PTI.
He said that constant increase in the prices of petroleum products and electricity had caused immense sufferings to the people. He said the ruling PTI would face crushing defeat in a similar manner in the elections to be held in other provinces of the country.
He said the PPP would continue to serve the masses even after losing the elections.
To a question, the Information Minister said the Sindh government had performed very well in the health sector but still there were certain issues and public complaints regarding the health facilities that required to be sorted out.
