Smoke Free Karachi Cycling Sunday Rally

Sports activities are an Effective strategy against the tobacco epidemic to save our future generations of this menace. 
The main objective of today’s Cycling Sunday Rally is not only to raise awareness among the youth against the hazards of tobacco use but also to draw their attention towards healthy activities.
The Administration of Karachi Division will take all possible steps to make Karachi a smoke-free city. These views were expressed by the Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon at a Smoke Free Karachi Cycling Sunday Rally which started from Empress Market and ended at Mazar e Quaid. Smoke Free Karachi Cycling Sunday Rally was organized by the Commissioner Karachi Division Office in collaboration with Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC).
The Worthy Commissioner said that District Implementation and Monitoring Committees (DIMC) on tobacco control laws have been notified in all the districts of Karachi. The Commissioner’s Office has set up a Tobacco Control Desk for monitoring the activities for making Smoke Free Karachi.
At least public service vehicles and restaurants will be completely smoke-free. A crack-down will be conducted against the sellers of Gutka, Mawa including other illegal and smokeless tobacco products.
The Commissioner Karachi praised the efforts
of Smoke Free Karachi Project for arranging this healthy activity event and also expressed satisfaction on the ongoing activities in this regard.
The Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon , Dr Minhaj us Siraj Project Director, Additional Commissioner / Focal Person for tobacco control Karachi Syed Jawad Muzaffar including all Deputy Commissioners of Karachi lead the Cycling Sunday Rally and it started after the ribbon cutting by Commissioner Karachi.
The Cycling rally was aimed to promote healthy environment in city to make the vision of “Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi” successful. Students including youngsters from different educational institutions of city participated in a cycling rally.
Dr. Minhaj us Siraj, Project Director, thanked the Commissioner Karachi and all officials of Administration of Karachi Division for their support in arranging the said event and also told youth to avoid using tobacco products as it is taking more than 160000 lives annually in Pakistan.
Syed Jawad Muzaffar Additional Commissioner Karachi/Focal Person for tobacco control said that, The Cycling Sunday Event is a start of healthy activities in the city to discourage the use of Tobacco Products among youth and the presence of more than 100 cyclists has proved that Karachiites are fully supporting our noble cause of Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi.
Muhammad Aftab Project Manager TSFC said that today’s event is our first ever event in Karachi city in which all over Karachi district administration is participating and supporting our initiative of Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi.
He assured District Administration for the continuation of Technical Support by TSFC Ministry of NHSRC to spread the message of Tobacco Control among masses and a day is not so far when we could say that Karachi is a Tobacco Smoke Free Model city.
He thanked to the District Administration Karachi for supporting the initiative of TSFC providing all the possible support.
Dr. Afshan Rubab, Administrator DMC South Karachi who was organizing the event, said that we are grateful to the citizens of Karachi and the project staff who played a key role in making this rally a success.
TSFC by the support of sponsors provided T-Shirts , caps including other material to the cyclists and certificates were also awarded to all the cyclists as well as volunteers.
