A Meeting on Tobacco Control Laws awareness held in Committee room of Sindh Board of Technical Education (SBTE) Chairman Secretariat for the Heads of Technical Educational Institutions of Karachi .
It was organized by aSBTE in collaboration with Tobacco Smoke Free Cities (TSFC) a project of Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination (NHSRC) Government of Pakistan in continuation to support the initiative of NHSRC and District Government of Karachi to make Karachi a model smoke free city.
The Chairman SBTE Dr Masroor Ahmed Sheikh commenced the meeting after the recitation of Holy Quran, he welcomed the guests Muhammad Younis Dahri Additional Deputy Commissioner East Karachi/Focal Person Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi East ,Project Director TSFC Dr. Minhaj us Siraj , Project Manager TSFC Muhammad Aftab including all the heads of educational institutions.
Whereas he stated that SBTE is willing to support this noble initiative of NHSRC and District Government to make Karachi a Smoke Free City through the awareness raising of Tobacco use hazards and strict enforcement of Tobacco Control Laws.
He said , In first step SBTE is going to declare its Chairman Secretariat premises a smoke free zone and hopefully this step of SBTE would replicate in all educational institutions which are affiliated with SBTE.
Chairman SBTE shared that Tobacco use is destroying the lives of our young generation as according to the report 160000 people die annually in Pakistan due to the use of tobacco products and whereas 1200 Pakistani children from age 5 to 15 start smoking everyday and later on they use cigarette for taking other drugs which is an alarming situation.
“Our technical Educational institutes are located in all over Sindh would spread the message of Tobacco Control in all over Sindh”, Chairman SBTE.
Further Dr. Minhaj us Siraj shed light on the tobacco control law, role of educational institutions heads in the enforcement of Tobacco Control laws and said that we can save the lives of our future generations through the enforcement of tobacco control laws and to raise awareness about tobacco use hazards among youth in educational institutions.
He thanked to Chairman SBTE, Deputy Secretary/Focal Person Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi Zahid Ali Khan including all the heads of educational institutions for attending this meeting and supporting this noble cause of protecting the lives of future generations.
While sharing his views Zahid Ali Khan Focal Person of SBTE for Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi said that, SBTE is going to organize All Pakistan Table Tennis Championship including other games events in which SBTE would engage TSFC Ministry of NHSRC to spread the message of Tobacco Control as players from all over Pakistan are coming in this event.
Whereas Speaking with the participants Muhammad Aftab stated that the Commissioner Karachi is supporting the mission of TSFC and through his support we have extended our work in all seven districts of Karachi , where the district implementation and monitoring committee on tobacco control has been formed and now the Tobacco Control Cells formation in respective Deputy Commissioner Offices is in process.
In concluding remarks Chief Guest of meeting Muhammad Younis Dahri Additional Deputy Commissioner East Karachi has stated that we started this initiative of tobacco smoke free Karachi from last year and now various departments officials including employees have got knowledge about the hazards of tobacco use and also got knowledge about the existing tobacco control laws.
Our mission is now spreading in communities as those who are attending our training are spreading this information among their communities, this is our success as our efforts are showing some positive impact in society.
At last SBTE Chairman secretariat has been declared smoke free zone after the ribbon cutting ceremony of smoke free signage which has fixed at the entrance of SBTE chairman secretariat, However the department has also issued letter of declaring the Chairman Secretariat Smoke Free zone.
Zahid Ali Khan Deputy Secretary/Focal Person of SBTE for Tobacco Smoke Free Karachi including other officials of SBTE and heads of technical educational institutions present on the occasion, also shared their views regarding the implementation on tobacco control laws in educational institutes.
