Policy devised & Efforts taken to make East Karachi as Smoke Free Model District


A Meeting of District Implementation and Monitoring Committee (DIM&C) on Tobacco Control East Karachi held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner East Karachi under the chairmanship of Muhammad Younus Dahri Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) II and Focal Person of Tobacco Control East Karachi. 

ADC II commenced the meeting after the recitation of Holy Quran and welcomed the delegation of Tobacco Smoke Free Cities (TSFC) Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination (NHSR&C) for coming from Islamabad to provide technical support to the district government for making district East Karachi as a smoke free model district. 

Dr. Minhaj us Siraj after welcoming all the members of DI&MC Tobacco Control East Karachi praised the efforts of Mr. Younus Dahri for his continuous support in this Nobel cause. 

Moreover, he briefed participants about the existing laws of Tobacco Control by shedding light on “The Prohibition of Smoking & Protection of Non-Smokers Ordinance 2002” and the SROs which issued time to time in its continuation. 

However, he also shared the best practices of TSFC by declaring public parks as a smoke free place which appreciated by World Health Organization (WHO) by highlighting the picture of Rose Garden Rawalpindi as a successful smoke free model around the world.  

In addition, the implementation and adoption of Tobacco Vender Act in Islamabad is also one of the best practices which the other countries around the world are replicating ,he added. 

He also told participants, that an estimated 166,000 people died annually in Pakistan due to the use of tobacco products , the ration of deaths from the use of Tobacco is much higher as compare of the deaths from other diseases like COVID-19. 

Dr. Minhaj asked district administration for compliance of recent SRO regarding the Advertisement ban on Point of Sale, he said tobacco products usually displayed at the cash counters of super stores which attracts the customers specially youth and by removing it from the eye level of customers we could reduce its sale . 

He said the staff of TSFC is working actively with District Administration in Karachi for the compliance on Tobacco Control laws and soon this city would emerged as a smoke free model city of Pakistan. 

The meeting was attended by the members of DIM&C and Focal Persons on Tobacco Control East Karachi , Officials from Police, Education , Health, Cantonment Board Faisal, Pakistan Railways, Auqaf including all the concerned department, Muhammad Aftab Project Manager TSFC, Bilal Zafar Coordinator Tobacco Control District East Karachi & Tanveer Qaimkhani Coordinator Tobacco Control District South Karachi attended the meeting and shared their views for the effective compliance of TC laws in District East. 

Additional Deputy Commissioner II East concluded the meeting by vote of thanks to  all the guests and assured for the full support of district administration for the strict enforcement of Tobacco Control laws in District East Karachi.
