Corruption is indeed a blight that has been weakening Pakistan for a couple of decades. The recent flour and sugar scandal in the early days of lock-down raises many questions on the performance of the sitting government accountability process.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Imran Khan has always spoken high about his resolute against corruption to eliminate this menace. For instance, Prime Minister Imran Khan during his visit to China stated that he wished to put 500 corrupt people behind bars in Pakistan just like China’s President Xi Jinping did, to rid the country of the “biggest impediment to prosperity”. He also mentioned the effective accountability system in China, where a corrupt mayor was convicted in just five days on charges of stashing tons of gold in the basement of his house. He called an end red-tapism, another form of corruption.
In the light of the above-mentioned statement of Prime minister Imran Khan, the culprits of the artificial sugar and flour crisis need to face the music of their wrongdoings.
Recently, the government publicly published the report in which PTI’s Top politician, Jhangir Tareen along with PTI government allies and PML-N political party leaders were held responsible for the flour and sugar crisis. This action by the government should be appreciated but opposition calls it a bias report. Somehow these allegations turned out to be valid as some corrupt ministers get clean chit due to their strong position in government.
Being a citizen of Pakistan, I am in a state of confusion about the PTI government role in the wheat and sugar scandal. Owing to the fact, Prime Minister Imran Khan on several occasions showed his aversion against previous government misuse of the power and authority so now, how come in his government this has happened.
When most of the countries halted their agricultural export for some period but Pakistan exported agricultural products particularly flour and sugar. It is a question mark on Prime Minister policy, which gave free hand to the ministers and government officials to permit the export of flour and sugar during the inception of the Corona outbreak.
It seems to be bizarre that the Prime minister is unaware of the people around him. Since there was a risk of food insecurity, so the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) warned about the risk of looming food crisis on its website. Due to this risk of the food crisis, many countries like Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, and Egypt have halted, limited, and restricted their agricultural export.
Mostly wheat and rice and flour exports were stopped till June. Consequently, some opportunists took advantage of the situation in Pakistan. The export of wheat and sugar could not be possible without the involvement of Pakistani government ministers and officials.
Prime minister appears to be concerned about losing the vote of confidence in the parliament. So, this might be the reason that some of the ministers get clear in the inquiry report.
After the sugar scandal inquiry report prepared by FIA, another Pandora box of forensic audit for all sugar mills will be opened as NAB and FIA were given tasks in the federal cabinet meeting.
Mr. Khan gave a go-head on 2nd June in his cabinet meeting for conducting the audits of all sugar mills since 1985. However, it would have been much better if the responsible elements of the recent sugar scandal get punished, and then the audit of all mills can be conducted.
Unfortunately, the PTI government has not much succeeded in recovering the looted money from corruption scandals. Moreover, we have been only witnessing NAB inquiries in the PTI government while very few convicted and punished. It is also very poignant that those convicted get bail on medical ground and enjoyed luxurious life at the expense of public looted money in foreign lands.
Prime Minister Imran khan in his public speeches talks about the system of the state of Medina, which was established by the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He says he wants to follow that system of Justice. So, it is our humble request to the Prime minister that it is high time to make an example out of the corrupt mafia within the government and out of the government.
The situation call to act by putting all culprits in jail all who are involved directly or indirectly in this scandal. The name of your party is Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (Pakistan movement of justice) so the justice should begin firstly from their corrupt party elements and allies. People of Pakistani want to see the implementation of their elected manifesto which proclaimed that PTI would make corruption-free Pakistan.
In a nutshell, Our Prophet Muhammad’s honesty, truthfulness, and system of justice has been acknowledged by the entire world. During His lifetime His enemies like Jews believed in His impartiality so they brought their cases in his court.
Hence, it is appropriate to cite Prophet Muhammad famous Hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad) here which teaches Muslim rulers to not get influence under any circumstance for establishing justice.
When a woman name Fatima bint Al-Aswad of the Makhzoom family with good connection was found guilty of theft. For the prestige of the Quraish, some prominent people among Hazrat Osama Bin Zayd (May Allah Please with Him) interceded on the request of Fatima relatives to save her from punishment. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) refused to condone the crime and expressed his displeasure by saying:
“The people before you were destroyed because they used to inflict the legal punishments on the poor and forgive the rich. By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! If Fatima (the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him ) did that (i.e. stole), I would cut off her hand.” Sahih al-Bukhari 6787 Book 86.Hadith 16
